When the Academy Awards honor the best American films and filmmakers, an award is also given to the best foreign language film produced outside the United States. One of the nominees this year is Ajami, an Israeli film that depicts the gritty reality of a neighborhood in Jaffa, near Tel Aviv.

Many of the film's actors are local residents who have experienced the violence for themselves. Daniel Estrin reports from Israel.
